More Girls at Mekhala House

Due to a funding shortfall caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been unable to replace Mekhala House students graduating from Year 12 with new intakes. As a result, the number of students we support at Mekhala House has dropped from 24 to 12 over the past two years. If given the Tucker Foundation grant, our proposed plan is to use the $24,610 provided to increase student intake by 12 (24 in total, as previously). This would make better use of existing program capacity without the need for significant increase in overhead costs, as Mekhala House is designed to accommodate up to 40 students. The funding will also provide additional opportunities to our existing students such as study tours to Mondulkiri Province and Phnom Penh to view prospective universities, to inspire our students to select the right university and course for their future, and more hours of private study one-on-one with Mekhala House teachers, to increase the girls’ ability to perform well for their examinations. Furthermore, grant funding will enable us to grow the Reading and Learning Club. This will ensure the tutoring service can be accessed by over 150 students across three remote, under-resourced schools in Prey Veng. The program will continue to run weekly (every Sunday) and cab utilise existing resources such as Mekhala House staff and the van supplied by CKC. We will also be able to provide a nutritious lunch to all the primary students who attend the program, and the teachers at the schools.
