Protecting Southern Greater Gliders from Planned Burns

https://strathbogiesustainableforests.wordpress.com

This project aims to protect the endangered Southern Greater Glider from planned burns conducted by Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA). Primarily this requires the prevention of gliders dying from exposure to flames, heat or smoke and the protection of glider habitat. Strathbogie Forest (24,000 hectares) is the largest remnant of native forest in the Strathbogie Ranges and a significant intact refuge for the species.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) has scheduled burns in the Strathbogie Forest, in areas where Southern Greater Gliders are found, starting March 2024. Past practices and studies show that these burns destroy old trees with hollows and annihilate the habitat. After repeated and unsuccessful attempts to negotiate with regional FFMV managers, the Chief Fire Officer and DEECA to stop burns that threaten Southern Greater Gliders survival, Save Our Strathbogie Forest (SOSF) found the only option to achieve change was to initiate a legal case.

Many people have shown a deep connection to their local forest and through our environmental programs gained informed ecological understandings of the requirements for the long-term survival of the Southern Greater Glider.
