Summer of Swifts 2025 – Citizen Science for the Endangered Swift Parrot
The Summer of Swifties program involves monitoring and recording Swift Parrots in active and proposed logging coupes around Tasmania.
Generous support by Albert & Barbara Tucker Foundation for this work in the summer of 2024/25 has enabled our team to achieve significant impacts. In the past year our monitoring and data-gathering of Swift Parrot breeding and feeding sites has been recognised by some of the most eminent science organisations in the country, including the CSIRO, Griffith University and the Biodiversity Council. Our lead scientist Dr Charley Gros used the data collected as part of his presentation to the International Congress on Conservation Biology in Brisbane in June 2025.
We are seeking to extend the work of the Science Assistant to manage a longer survey period in the summer breeding season of 2025/26. While this will include some travel and other equipment expenses, the contribution being sought from Albert & Barbara Tucker Foundation will be primarily applied to the salary cost of the Science Assistant.
