Period Equity to Keep 850 Girls in School
No pads = no school. No school = no future.
This program will empower 850 girls aged 11 – 16 in Krabei Real Commune, Cambodia to stay in school by providing them with reusable menstrual hygiene kits and essential education about menstruation. By addressing stigma and reducing period-related absences, the initiative promotes girls’ health, dignity, and educational continuity.
Period poverty impacts millions of women and girls in Cambodia, where 17.7% of the population lives below the poverty line, and gender discrimination remains pervasive. In low-income communities, the stigma around menstruation leaves girls isolated and uninformed, denying them access to education and basic health knowledge. Many miss school in shame or fear, suffering in silence during a crucial stage of their development.
This project is run by local Cambodian staff from HHA who offer accurate education on menstruation, reproductive health and pregnancy, and build trust through personal storytelling. They also provide essential ongoing mentoring sessions to address any issues.
Some girls are trained as Period Ambassadors to run workshops and ensure project sustainability.
Each kit includes four reusable cloth menstrual pads, soap, and a carry pouch, all made by HHA Cambodia’s sewing graduates, who have moved out of poverty thanks to previous support from the Tucker Foundation. These kits last around five years, the knowledge lasts a lifetime, all for just $23.49 per girl.
