Education scholarships for young people in Nepal to break the cycle of trafficking and violence

This project focuses on providing funding for young people in Nepal who have decided to pursue further education through Diplomas. This education will be provided through the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT), with courses in health care and engineering. The scholarships cover admission fees, textbooks, and transportation costs for the three-year Diploma.

Asha Nepal (AN), a partner of Project Didi Australia and registered as an NGO in Nepal in 2008, supports women and children, survivors of trafficking, sexual abuse, domestic slavery and domestic violence. Child survivors face prolonged trauma, stigma and exclusion from their families and communities. These stressors and financial pressure and family instability, which exist prior to, during and after violence can trap survivors in a cycle of poverty and exploitation.

Providing young people with a safe and supportive home base allows the majority to return to school, and pursue further education into different career paths. AN recognises the importance of continued education for these young people as the only means to change their future. Throughout their schooling journey, AN actively supports these young women through tailored support. This is important, as school dropout rates for young women and girls is high. Once in grade 10, the girls start selecting courses, with AN providing support and guidance, assisting them in making decisions on their future education journey.

This higher-level education provides seven young people with the professional development, academic and skills needed to graduate as middle level technicians.
